Byron Leftwich is going to be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers starting QB after a heated (not) training camp. He joins the list of Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, Bruce Gradkowski, Tim Rattay and Chris Cwik’s BFF Chris Simms as QBs to start in Tampa the last four years. Leftwich is playing for his fourth team in four years and is an equivalent to a replacement level player in the NFL, if not slightly worse. This isn’t a surprising move by any means, but it falls right in line with the Buccaneers as an organization.
One time in their 33 year franchise, have the Bucs scored in the top 10 in points scored. Compare that to the 15 times they have scored in the top 10 in points allowed, including 5 times in the top 3. Shows you how much they know and value offense.
Leftwich is going to be another guy that plays the position to no stardom. He takes too long on every aspect of playing quarterback: dropping back, his release and stride. Combine that with his immobility, Byron isn’t anything special. His career completion percentage is 58%, less than average and his TD-Int Ratio isn’t going to thrill any coach. He is a worse version of Jake Delhomme. So for you fantasy folks out there, you shouldn’t draft Byron, unless you get positive points for Sacks and Incomplete Passes.
The lack of a good QB in Tampa, as well as any offensive skill positions, is unfortunate for Tampa for a couple of reasons.
1. They have one of the best offensive lines in football, and only getting better with time
2.Their defense is good, with a potential star in Gaines Adams at Defensive End.
Tampa Bay better be doing their best effort to develop, and then eventually play Josh Freeman if they plan on winning the NFC South anytime soon.

I do like Chris Simms. However, Byron has some weapons in Tampa and he isn’t all that bad. Here is a guy that deserved another shot at a starting job. Yes, his delivery takes way too long, but he can be effective. I’m not saying he is a fantasy starter, but he could be a guy that plays alright during the season.
