Two clubs destined for greatness at the beginning of the season. But Manchester United and Liverpool find themselves struggling, while both Chelsea and Arsenal seem to be on the right track. Both London teams have won every game until last weekend and were gaining momentum. Some did say the Premiership fight was going to be in London. But that was when people forgot about the referees.
I have been watching the Premiership for over twelve years now and it never changes. Liverpool and Manchester United are in trouble, here comes the calvary to lend a helping hand. Maybe a questionable call to give a penalty or a sending off to help even things up. And of course the British media broadcasting the games – old players that usually come from Manchester United or Liverpool-don’t say a thing and it continues on. On the contrary, they seem to be excited when either team has the ball; and sometimes I feel they are confused on what match their watching.
Arsenal vs Manchester United this past weekend was a great example. Manchester United losing wouldn’t have taken them out of the competition entirely, but they would have had a mountain to climb. So what happens. United were playing horrible. They couldn’t even touch the ball, and Arsenal’s Almunia didn’t have to make a save. But then Arsenal was not given a clear cut penalty on one side to give them a 2-0 lead, and United were given a VERY weak penalty on the other side. And even poor Arsene Wenger was sent off the pitch for kicking a water bottle after an Arsenal goal was called offside in the last minute of injury time.
If it was a one match thing sure, but does anyone remember that Tottenham game last season, where two of United’s goals were questionable? And keep looking back, things seem to happen when United struggle.
But of course the commentators only words were that Manchester United had a a goal in them, they were sure. How they were sure when Arsenal were in complete dominance, I don’t know. And instead of discussing some of Arsenal’s qualities, I felt like I was watching Manchester United Television. No, I probably would have gotten a more unbiased broadcast from Manchester United TV.
Rafa Benitez made that monologue last season about Manchester United’s behavior. Behaviors like : crowding the referees after a call, or Alex Ferguson speaking and yelling to the refs as they walk to the tunnel at the half. Things that the press will denounce other teams of doing – but not United.
But Liverpool aren’t the angels either. It seems that they also get a little help now and then. Come on the premiership over that quick, that can’t happen. So poor Bolton played with 10 men and Liverpool squeeze through a victory. One time thing? Let’s flashback to a time when Michael Owen was still a Red and Roman Abramovic wasn’t on the radar. Owen was granted a penalty that never existed and then allowed to take it three times against Chelsea’s Carlo Cudicini.
You can say what you want. You can say I am myself biased and can’t see things properly. Or I am simply trying to be controversial. But facts and history don’t lie. Look closely on the next few United and Liverpool matches. I challenge you not to notice.
