The Forum: The Prodigal Son Returns

Does Favre Look Good In Purple?

Does Favre Look Good In Purple?

Just in case you haven’t heard about it anywhere, there is a somewhat significant Monday Night Football game tonight.  Yes, Brett Favre returns in all his glory to play his former team for the first time in his career. You won’t find anything else on ESPN today, it’s all about Favre. Hey, he hijacked your sports news for 2-3 off-seasons, what’s one more day? While Favre isn’t admitting that this is a shot at revenge, any intelligent fan knows that he’s lying through his teeth. Being that we are based mostly out of Milwaukee, it would be a disservice for FP2FP to gloss over such an important event. What better way to talk about the game than The Forum? Although we only asked for a paragraph, our resident Packers fan, Kevin Tracy, got a little excited and we ended up with two. So, with Brett Favre facing his former team for the first time in his career, what can we expect to see tonight?

Rodgers And Favre Duel It Out Tonight

Rodgers And Favre Duel It Out Tonight

The Packers-Vikings Monday night game will draw more attention to Brett Favre than the game. Considering the recent topics of non-stop talk about Tony Romo, Cowboys new stadium, and the Wildcat Formation, by the Monday Night Football Crew, I won’t mind the Favre chatter. I’m sure you will see some Packers fans doing some crazy things related to Brett Favre and I’d like to see some clever signs, other than 12>4. As far as the game, the Packers pass blocking needs to hold up to win this game. Aaron Rodgers has been sacked an NFL-leading 12 times, and he has been hit many more times than that. The Vikings defensive line is elite, so it could be a long day for #12. Favre has been sacked 9 times, but the key stat is that the Packers have forced an NFL-best 10 turnovers. Also Green Bay leads the NFL with 7 Interceptions. Favre throws picks; Rodgers gets sacked, so this could end up being a run-heavy game. Finally, I would like to see Favre get picked off several times and throw an interception on a potential game-winning drive.

What else is there to say, but to say that one of the NFL’s best rivalries just got a whole lot better, as obvious as it is.  I think the best way to sum up the spirit of the first Packer-Viking game this year is to look at what The Milwaukee Burger Company restaurant in Eau Claire, WI has in the works.  The restaurant is having what is being called “a Brett Favre memorabilia burn party”.  The idea was first to donate $10 to charity for every Brett Favre item brought to the restaurant and burn it all at halftime.  The fire department though, found out about the big plans after the story was featured on ESPN’s First Take earlier this week, so the restaurant had to scale back their plans to burning one jersey at halftime.  However people are still encouraged to bring in their Brett Favre memorabilia, because they still are donating $10 for every item to the Wisconsin Alliance for Fire Safety.  I must say, I plan to donate.  I have wanted to destroy my Favre stuff ever since last summer, so I figure there is no better opportunity than this to get rid of it, since I can help a good cause at the same time.  I do however plan to keep my life-size cutout of the moron and burn that myself at a later date.

Of course, this game is all about Favre, but for me, it is still about beating the Vikings.  As much as I despise Favre, I love the Packers even more.  The Packers are no doubt the underdogs, but don’t count them out.  I’m sick of Favre and could really care less.  I hope the Packers hit him hard on every play and knock him silly forcing him to retire so we can be done with all this nonsense.  In the end though, all I care about is the Packers beating the Vikings and catching them in the standings.  The Packers are 2-1 and it hasn’t been pretty.  The Vikings are good, and the last time Favre took the field, he looked like the Favre of old, leading the Vikings to a come from behind victory.  Bottom line is the Packers have something to prove, and this game has the tension of a playoff game.  This game though certainly isn’t the end all be all.  The Vikings may have the upper hand here.  What I can’t wait for is Favre to come to Lambeau and for some drunk naked idiot to run out onto the field and tackle Favre on his first snap from scrimmage.  If the Packers win on Monday I won’t know what to do with myself.  At the very least, I’d be so excited I wouldn’t be able to sleep all night.

Just One Of The Shirts Being Worn Around Wisconsin

Growing up a Bears fan wasn’t always fun. Up until this year (not counting week 1), I never knew what it meant to have a competent NFL quarterback. I suffered through Cade McNown, Jim Miller, Henry Burris, Kordell Stewart, etc. (The list goes on and on and on…) Naturally, I despised the Packers. However, the fact that they had an MVP-Caliber player under center for so many years just rubbed dirt into my wounds. Unfortunately, old man Favre wasn’t impervious to old age and, after months of waffling over retirement, Favre was sent away from Green Bay. As a Bears fan, it was interesting to see the reaction from fans. Very few embraced Aaron Rodgers early on, many couldn’t believe that Ted Thompson would do this to them. Trading Favre was like a personal attack on their families. How dare you trade away Favre? Even though Aaron Rodgers proved to be a much better quarterback last season, there were still fans that clung to Favre because he led the Jets to more wins than the Packers last season. This off-season, however, changed everything. With Favre returning to the NFC North with (gasp!) the Vikings, I’m not sure he has a fan in Wisconsin anymore. There are a number of shirts available for purchase focused on Favre, and while I can’t put all of them on the site, here are a few that could spark your interest (the last one has some NSFW language, it is also my favorite). Anyway, the Favre off-season awfulness has warped and angered me so much that I might actually be rooting for the Packers tonight. Despite the fact that, you know, I hate them, I mostly want to see Favre get shown up by his former team. I want Aaron Rodgers, who I always thought would be good, to outplay Favre the entire game. Also, a Packers win puts the Bears in a tie for first place, so there is an advantage to the Packers winning the game. However, if the Packers drop this game, I wouldn’t be able to pass up tormenting all those Packer fans in the area! You know what, it might be a great day to be a Bears fan. Either way, some part of me wins tonight.

I’m thinking about some famous people from the past for some reason or another. People like Gavrilo Princip, Robert Ford, John Wilkes Booth… Not sure why though.
