What Is This, Bizarro World?
Six weeks are now in the books, and there are still many questions surrounding the NFL. While there are still four undefeated teams in the NFL, there are a number of teams that have turned in uneven performances thus far. One coach has already lost his play-calling duties, and one of the longest tenured coaches might be on the block. Let’s recap, shall we?
Saints Number One?
The Saints may have proven they are the team to beat in the NFL after a dominating performance over the New York Giants. Drew Brees threw 4 touchdown passes, and seven different players scored for the Saints in a 48-27 win. The Giants normally great pass rush was nonexistent against the Saints. Brees found his favorite target, Marques Colston 8 times for 166 yards. The Saints completely controlled this game right from the start. The Giants, forced to play catch up the entire time, had no answer. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this game was the Saints defense. With a competent defense, and Drew Brees, this Saints team has to be the best in the NFL right now.
How’s Your Knee?

At Least VInce Young Makes The Titans Games Exciting
Tom Brady threw for 6 touchdowns against the Titans despite poor weather conditions, including 5 in the second quarter. The Titans, meanwhile, completed 2 passes all day for -7 yards on the day. What the hell happened in this game? The Titans fall from grace has been well documented. Their lack of pass rush has exposed their cornerbacks. Jeff Fisher, one of the longest tenured coaches in the NFL, could be on the chopping block. The Titans have now fallen to 0-6 on the season. At this point, what’s holding them back from starting Vince Young? Free Vince! He might be worse than Kerry Collins, but it’s not this team is going anywhere in 2009. Meanwhile, the Patriots appear to have returned to form. Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and Tom Brady looked like they were firing on all cylinders. Following knee surgery last season, it took Peyton Manning about six games to return to form. It looks like the same for Brady.
Jekyll and Hyde
Thus far, the top and the bottom of the NFL power rankings are pretty easy to predict. There are 10 awful teams this season (Was, Det, Car, TB, Stl, Buf, Cle, Ten, Oak, and KC), there are 6-7 great teams (Ind, Min, NO, NYG, Den, Atl, maybe Cin), and in the middle it’s a huge mess. One week after winning 41-0, the Seahawks only scored 3 points against the Cardinals. The Texans can’t seem to run the ball, and have turned in uneven performances all season. Chicago and Green Bay have no Offensive lines. The Jets and Baltimore have faded after strong starts. Philadelphia just lost to the Raiders. Jacksonville barely beat the Rams…I could keep going on if I needed to. The point is, do we really know if any of these teams are good? Week after week, I have no idea what Texans team is going to show up. After three weeks, everyone was ready to crown the Jets as the class of the AFC East. Since then, they have dropped the last three games. One of those teams probably puts it together and makes a run at the playoffs, but I couldn’t tell you which one with any type of certainty. Which is why I’m picking the Texans as that team.
The Bet Gets More Interesting

I Could Lose Because Of This Guy?
For those of you still paying attention to The Bet (read: no one), it may actually get interesting over the next few weeks. Jason Campbell was benched against the Chiefs after a poor start to the game and was replaced by Todd Collins. Apparently, Collins wasn’t the boost the Redskins needed, because they were defeated by the Chiefs. Meanwhile, JaMarcus Russell has likely his best game of the season (and still throws 2 INTs). The Raiders, however, upset the Eagles and Russell threw for 244 yards. Obviously, Campbell getting benched is the worst situation for me. Despite the benching, I still feel like I can win this thing. Plus, Jim Zorn isn’t calling plays anymore for Washington. Actually, I have no idea if that’s a plus, but it can’t get much worse there.
Tonight
The undefeated Denver Broncos face the division rival San Diego Chargers. Kyle Orton gets another chance to prove that he wins games!

I wouldn’t considered Denver, Atlanta and Cincy great teams

Cin was a maybe, give them some more time. Denver is undefeated and has proven themselves against some tough competition this year (Dal, NE, and Cin albeit on a fluke play). I would give them the benefit of the doubt right now. Atl looks good to me, I buy them as one of the best teams in the NFC.
