Monty’s Off-Season Opinions

I think Adrian Gonzalez will stay in sunny San Diego

I think Adrian Gonzalez will stay in sunny San Diego

Adrian Gonzalez to Boston?- I didn’t buy into this rumor at the trade deadline and don’t this off-season. I know the new Padres GM Jed Hoyer was a former Red Sox executive, but his asking price is so ridiculously high. Gonzalez is in his prime at a market-friendly contract, so trading him would be really tough for SD. I doubt Boston, let alone anyone, will pay the rate SD is asking for at this time. Also, ESPN’s Jayson Stark is also telling people not to buy this rumor…

Monty’s Thought: Gonzo to stay in SD

Matt Holliday- Is anyone going to come to St. Louis’ suspected 5 year, 17-18 million dollars per year offer to Holliday? Reports are that the Yankees and Red Sox aren’t interested. The Orioles pulled out after finding out Holliday’s quote and the Mets seem to be keen on Jason Bay. At this point, I have to imagine, barring a surprise, that Holliday will be a Cardinal for years to come

Monty’s Thought: Holliday to come back to St. Louis

Jason Bay- Similar to the Matt Holliday sweepstakes, who else besides the Mets are pursuing Bay? He has turned down offers from Boston and the Red Sox just signed Mike Cameron. The Mariners traded for Milton Bradley and ESPN’s Buster Olney is convinced the Mets are the only major contender for Bay.

Thought: Bay to the Mets

Boston Red Sox- The general consensus heading into the 2010 FA is that they would end up with Bay or Holliday. Even Ken Rosenthal said at the Winter Meetings he didn’t see a scenario where Boston didn’t end up with either. Well, I guess this is going to be the scenario, where the go the cheaper and better defensive route with Mike Cameron.

Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik- I was a big fan of him last year, and this off-season he continues to work his magic getting Cliff Lee for not much, according to Keith Law and Dave Cameron, and most recently sending Carlos Silva, who couldn’t pitch in SEATTLE, for Milton Bradley. Bradley certainly comes with baggage, but he can hit, something the M’s offense needs. If Bradley becomes an issue, they can just cut him. This was trading a player with little to no value, Silva, for potential value, Bradley.
