The Defending Champs Face Off Against The Top Team In The AFC Last Season
Football fans rejoice! The time has come, the wait is over, and the season is ready to begin. In just a few hours, the defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers will take on the Tennessee Titans in the first regular season game of 2009. There are a number of story lines surrounding this match up. Tennessee, as you may remember, defeated the Steelers in a tough regular season match up which resulted in LenDale White stomping on the Terrible Towels. At years end, however, the Steelers hoisted the Super Bowl trophy. In a game featuring two of the better defenses in the league, what can we expect to see in our first regular season action of the year?

NFL Season Preview: AFC North

Can the Steelers Repeat?
The AFC North was a top-heavy division in 2008. Both Baltimore and Pittsburgh won double digit games, while Cincinnati and Cleveland both managed only 4 wins. Although only the 6th seed, the Ravens wrecked havoc in the playoffs, beating Miami and Tennesee before advancing to play the Steelers in the AFC Championship game. The Steelers would come out on top, of course, and go on the win the Superbowl. The Bengals lost franchise Quarterback Carson Palmer early on with an arm injury and never recovered. The Browns failed to capitalize on their 10 win season in 2007. Derek Anderson came back to earth, and Braylon Edwards was plagued by dropped passes. With Cleveland and Cincinnati starting to rebuild, can Pittsburgh become the first team since New England to repeat? Or will Joe Flacco lead the Ravens to a division title this season?

When Should Matthew Stafford Play?
Each season, a few teams draft the next franchise-saving quarterback. However, many fans and analysts argue over when that quarterback should start. With the recent announcement that Mark Sanchez will get the starting nod for the Jets, we here at Foul Pole have decided to debate this yearly phenomenon. Pro athletes find themselves in the far too common position of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Shootings and assault cases later we have no reason but to not trust our most trusted and revered stars. Like the boy who cried wolf it is always hard to distinguish who is in the right. However, the athletes are no longer the only ones in question when it comes to crying wolf. Most recently, Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks have been added to this list.

Big Ben
Roethlisberger’s case is interesting. Occurring in June of 2008 during a pro-am golf tournament at the Harrah’s Lake Tahoe and a claim not being filed until July 19, 2009. Andrea McNulty, the alleged victim and former employee of Harrah’s, filed a lawsuit against Roethlisberger claiming that he sexually assaulted her. Reports that were filed in the lawsuit claim that McNulty required hospitalization and treatments for depression after the assault.
Although by simple reasoning we have learned to question our favorite athletes in these situations there have been cases to prove otherwise. Most infamously and with the most notoriety, the Kobe Bryant sexual assault case from 2003. Although Bryant admitted to acting adulterously, the assault charges were soon dropped and the case was settled out of the courtroom. We learned that it is possible to trust our athletes…in some regard.
Eli Manning Contract Analysis Part 2
Is Eli Manning the worst highest paid player in NFL history?
I’m only going back to 2000 on this one, if you can find a worse player before 2000 that was the highest paid player in the NFL, then I will grant you a no-prize.
