Merry Christmas: 1st Basemen Fantasy Rankings

The No-Brainer Number 1 Pick at 1st
1st base has typically been a fantasy position that offers a lot of depth. If you aren’t fortunate enough to take Albert Pujols early, you can always grab a dependable sleeper much later. This year, there is more of the same. While 1st base is a deep position, the talent available is very young, which could lead to some huge breakouts this season. For example, only 5 players on each list are players currently over 30 years of age. That’s a lot of young and (sometimes) cheap talent. Take advantage of that this season.
Rankings after the jump.

Big Surprise Here, Mauer is Number 1
Before we get into the column, I want to mention that Monty has also decided to take on this endeavor. We haven’t made any wagers, but bragging rights will work as far as I am concerned. Without further ado…
The last few seasons, the catcher position has been quite top heavy. The upcoming season should bring more of the same. While there appear to be 3-4 sure things at catcher, the rest of the top 10 is marred with breakout players and bounce back candidates.

The Bet…Week 2

JaMarcus Russell is flexing while completing an impressive 35 percent of his passes
As a reminder, Chris Cwik and I have a bet regarding who will be a better QB this year, Jason Campbell or JaMarcus Russell. I proposed the bet after much Russell bashing by Cwik.
My side of the bet isn’t looking too glamorous at this point. I know only 2 games have been played, but when I see the bottom ticker showing that JaMarcus Russell is 7-24, I don’t need to look at Jason Campbell’s stats to know that I lost this week. Come on, 7-24! I don’t want to know how that ranks in recent history for lowest completion percentage with at least 20 throws, and I’m a stats guy. Not only that, but it was against the CHIEFS defense, not exactly the “Dome Patrol” from the early 90’s.

Jason Campbell Leads After Week 1
Time to lighten things up around here. Matt “Monty” Montgomery, is an unabashed lover of all things LSU. We know that, and we love him for it. As many of you may have noticed, I wrote two very similar articles about both Jason Campbell and JaMarcus Russell. While Campbell’s outlook was a bit more positive, Russell’s was not so rosy. Remember, that Russell went to the fabled Louisiana State University. Monty, obviously, took exception to the fact that I implied Russell might not be a very good NFL quarterback. Therefore…The Bet was made.
Throughout the season, we will be monitoring both Russell and Campbell in a few key statistics. Whichever quarterback outplays the other in those stats will be the winner. The loser will be buying dinner for the winner. Pictures can be taken, good times can be had. I, of course, will be taking Jason Campbell. Monty, as expected, will be taking JaMarcus Russell. The stats we will be monitoring are as follows:
- Touchdowns
- Interceptions
- Completion Percentage
- Passing Yardage
- Quarterback Rating
Let’s analyze how each of our boys did in Week 1.
NFL Roundup Part II

Brees Threw 6 TD vs. Lions
Saints Offense Doesn’t Skip A Beat
New Orleans Saints led the NFL in several offensive categories last year, including QB Drew Brees nearly breaking Dan Marino’s single season record for passing yards, and yesterday the Saints offense dropped 45 points on Detroit. Brees threw for 6 TD’s, and the offense gained over 500 yards of offense against the lowly Lions. Matthew Stafford made his debut for the Lions and struggled. He completed just above 43% of his passes, but this is part of the growing pains for starting a rookie QB. He made a couple good throws, hitting Calvin Johnson, on what Chris Cwik will argue until he’s blue in the face was touchdown but wasn’t, and Bryant Johnson on a nice out pattern. The Lions defensive woes continued, despite some turnovers, and Saints marched on to victory.
