Breaking Down Matthew Stafford: Weeks 2-3

What Does Matt Ryan Have In Common With Matthew Stafford?
After yesterday’s article ran a bit longer than I had anticipated, I decided to break up the Matthew Stafford article into two pieces. The first focused on Stafford’s scouting reports, weaknesses, and week 1 performance against the Saints. This piece will focus on Stafford’s week 2 and week 3 performances. There is very little footage available for week 2, so I will mainly be focused on week 3. There are, however, some interesting things we can take away from Stafford’s week 2 performance. Matthew Stafford may have brought the Lions their first win in over a season in week 3, but has Stafford improved enough since week 1 to lead a few more Lions victories?

There Is No Buzz Surrounding Stafford Right Now
All around the NFL there has been talk about the incredible rise of the New York Jets. Led by a strong defense, and the surprising play of Mark Sanchez, the Jets have raced out of the gate to a 3-0 record. This had lead a number of analysts to anoint Sanchez as the next Matt Ryan or Ben Roethlisberger. Deadspin had fun pointing out the fact that everyone loves Sanchez’s “poise,” but Football Outsiders own Doug Farrar looked at the game tapes and dissected Sanchez’s play. The early results for Sanchez are promising. Farrar notes that Sanchez has good footwork, excellent intangibles, and a knack for the play-fake. However, very few analysts are focusing on number one overall pick, Matthew Stafford. Obviously, Stafford has not gotten off to a great start this season. However, he is working with a much less talented team around him. So, what is going wrong for Matthew Stafford?
More Than Just Another Sunday

Detroit Lions safety Louis Delmas celebrates with fans in the stands after the Lions' 19-14 win over the Washington Redskins
By: Brad Galli
Today wasn’t just Sunday for Lions fans.
Today meant a little bit more. Today marked the first win Detroit had seen since December 23, 2007. Today got people thinking, “Hey, this whole ‘good feeling’ thing could work. I could do this more often.”
Today was so much more.
Today made a city enjoy Sunday for every bit of what it has to offer. At approximately 4:20 Eastern Time, the Detroit Lions reminded us why we do what we’ve done for so many years: wake up with a complete disregard for reality, and instead gravitate towards outlandish optimism. “This is our year.” “Today’s our day.” The list of cliché catchphrases was endless….until 2008. After sixteen Sundays of dropping our chins to our chest, tucking our tails between our legs, and burying hope for, well, hope, enough was enough. With an economy taking a toll on each metro-Detroit citizen, the Lions soon became less attractive than a month-old carton of milk.

Drafting Warner Was A Good Thing, Right?
After months of waiting, the day had finally come. For me, the start of the NFL is like Christmas. Seriously, there is no difference. I, as usual, was up early and ready to enjoy the games at a local sports bar with a few friends of the site (Matt Montgomery and Kevin Tracy being two of them). After agonizing over my final fantasy roster decisions, I left and arrived at the bar. Not surprisingly, I was the first one there. Eventually, everyone got there right as the games were starting. We sat down, ordered some food and drinks, and prepared for the first slate of games. Here is was I learned Week 1.

A Former ROY Gets Another Chance
The final pre-season games are over, and it’s hard to believe that the regular season will begin in just two days. As rosters were solidified and depth charts were set, a few interesting decisions were made leading up to the start of the season. Let’s do a quick recap, shall we?

Sanchez Will Have his Chance Tonight
The NFL pre-season has reached the halfway point. After tonight, every team in the NFL will have played two pre-season games. Tonight’s game, however, is an important one for rookie QB Mark Sanchez. Sanchez will get his first start of the pre-season against one of the toughest defenses in the NFL. A good showing by Sanchez could mean that he’s the guy for the New York Jets this season. A poor start, and the QB competition continues. With tonight being an important night for the young signal caller, let’s take a look at some of the other QB battles in the NFL.
