What’s Happened to Gordon Beckham?

There hasn't been much to celebrate this season.

Once hailed the savior of the White Sox, Gordon Beckham has suffered from the dreaded “sophomore slump” in 2010. In 430 at-bats as a rookie, Beckham put up a slash line of .270/.347/.460. In the off-season, Beckham was shifted to 2nd base, where he was expected to make a bigger impact with both his bat and his glove. While Beckham has provided value with his glove in 2010, as a hitter he has completely collapsed. Beckham’s current slash line of .206/.283./252 has left many White Sox fans wondering about the future of their former top prospect.

Who Replaces Juan Pierre?

Can he get back into the lead-off role?

After almost a month with no extra base hits, a .200 average, and a .261 OBP Juan Pierre will be moved out of the lead-off spot. After an 0-5 performance on Thursday, Ozzie Guillen was not pleased with his new outfielder.

“He ain’t playing [Friday],…And then we’ll try and figure out the next day, we have a couple of righties [pitching Saturday and Sunday], move him down to the No. 9 spot to make him relax a little bit.”

With Pierre now out of the lead-off spot, at least for the time being, who is the best candidate to replace the speedy, slap-hitting outfielder?

My First Fantasy Draft Recap…

I was disappointed I couldn't draft with these guys

After months of having the bitter taste of losing my CBS by a strikeout and several mock drafts, I did two league drafts yesterday. One league is with my friend Jim and we are in year 7 of that league. The other is just for fun with my roommates

I have spent most of my time prepping for fellow blogger Chris Cwik’s 12 team auction keeper league, which drafts this week. Let me say that preparing for an auction draft with smart owners is 100 times harder than preparing for a standard draft. Doing those mocks gave me a good sense of value, so I felt I didn’t need to practice any standard drafts.

That aside, here is a breakdown of Jim’s draft from my perspective…

Jim’s league is a 12 team H2H, standard categories adding hits on offense and walks allowed for pitching with 24 roster spots on Yahoo.

I had the 11th overall pick. When I saw this I thought about going the best 1b available then Tulo/Wright on the way back with my first two picks.

Well so much for that plan. I wrote the other day that Tulo could be 1st round fantasy pick. Well, not only did Tulo go in the 1st round, he went 7th overall!

1st Round (11)- Prince Fielder. I had Tex, Howard and Cabrera available to me, and I wanted one of those 1b. I like Prince’s HR, RBI and he will hit around .300.

2nd Round(14)- Justin Upton. I used nearly all 1:30 of the clock to make this pick. Wright, Kinsler, Howard and Cabrera were available. I realize the talent I passed on, but Upton is such an amazing talent with 5 tools that broke onto the scene last year. I think he will put up 1st round fantasy numbers this year. Also, I figured a good 3B and 2B will be available to me later on, so I took a risk by not drafting position scarcity.

2010 Fantasy Baseball: Second Basemen Rankings

Beckham Should Establish Himself at 2nd this Season

Sorry for the extended holiday break. After last night’s podcast, we are back and ready to update you guys with our opinions on the latest sports news.

Most of you will be watching the NFL Playoffs today, which is a sad reminder that fantasy football has come and gone. However, the fantasy baseball magazines are already available for pre-order (and possibly available in stores already). That being said, the second base rankings were hell for me. As a matter of fact, I couldn’t even finish the rankings because I don’t see much value in owning some of the players. Yikes!

Follow along with our rankings after the jump.

White Sox Spoiler In AL Central?

Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavy delivers during the first inning against the Detroit Tigers

Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavy delivers during the first inning against the Detroit Tigers

The White Sox are mathematically eliminated from this year’s postseason, but it may not stop them from playing spoiler. The Sox could be the key factor in determining the AL Central winner as they play the Tigers five more times before the season ends.

In Friday night’s game the Tigers bats struggled against recently activated starter Jake Peavy. Peavy threw seven scoreless innings, striking out eight. That game could be a taste for the White Sox future. Alex Rios scored on a Gordon Beckham home run, leading the offense, Jake Peavy had a great start, and Matt Thornton closed out the game.

Kenny Williams Likes Taking Risks

Is Alex Rios headed to the South Side?

Is Alex Rios headed to the South Side?

After months of speculation (and after the Trade Deadline), the Toronto Blue Jays are once again rumored to be making a big move. However, it’s not Roy Halladay that the Jays are shopping. This time around, the Blue Jays put outfielder Alex Rios on waivers. It was announced yesterday that Rios was claimed by an unnamed team. After much speculation, it appears that the Chicago White Sox were the team that put in a claim on Rios. So, what exactly is Kenny Williams playing at here?
