What to do with Jake Peavy?

What's wrong with Peavy?

Anyone who believed the White Sox would compete in 2010 cited the addition of a healthy Jake Peavy as a major reason for optimism. Just 5 starts into the season, White Sox fans are already pulling their hair out every time Peavy takes the mound. Coming into fantasy drafts, Peavy was one of the most interesting players to project. While doubters cited his injury history and new ballpark as reasons to avoid Peavy, others were optimistic about his performance down the stretch in 2009. Thus far, it appears the doubters may have been right. Although it’s only been 5 starts, is it time to cut bait on Peavy?

Cwik’s Auction Draft Results For My Team

It cost me $31, but I got Lester

My final draft, in fellow blogger Chris Cwiks’ league, took place last Thursday, and it was a marathon to put it lightly. The draft nearly lasted five hours with no breaks.

In a draft that long you can’t have some crazyness or some questionable bids.

Here were the top moments.

1.By accident, and later fixed by Cwik, an owner bidded $111 on Joey Votto. He probably meant to bid 11, but put in an extra 1, and for about 30 picks, he was stuck with Votto at 111, before being allowed to select him at 40 bucks.

2. Justin Upton going for $50, the same value as Pujols and 3 dollars more than Hanley Ramirez

3. Troy Tulowitzki was the 5th most expensive player at $42. Ahead of him were: Upton and Pujols for $50, Hanley for $47 and Braun for $44.

4. Rafael Soriano went for $7 and Alfonso Soriano went for $5

5. Jason Heyward was the 2nd player nominated in the auction and went for $11. He was the second most expensive player to never play a MLB game to Stephen Strasburg at $14

My strategy was built on one of two premises

Scenario 1: Get Hanley Ramirez

Scenario 2: Get Troy Tulowitzki

Tim Hudson: Worth A Fantasy Roster Spot

Tim Hudson is back from surgery, but shouldn't be forgotten

Tim Hudson was gone for most of 2009, but shouldn't be forgotten for 2010

It’s not too often I will recommend taking a player in his mid 30s for your fantasy team, but I have a good feeling about one. Tim Hudson, the Braves 4th starter this season, is worth considering for one of your fantasy baseball roster spots. Hudson has an ADP of 203.14 and is listed as the 49th best starting pitcher just behind Dice-K and Jorge De La Rosa, while ahead of Jeff Niemann, who I love this season, and Randy Wolf.

If you haven’t drafted yet, think about him with a late pick and if you have drafted, keep an eye on what he’s been doing.

Why keep an eye on Hudson?

-This spring, I know I know take spring training with a grain of salt, Hudson is 5th among starters with 20 innings pitched, as a frame of reference, James Shields leads all pitchers with just 21 1/3 IP.

-Hudson has allowed 3 earned runs in those 20 innings combined with 17 K’s compared to 3 BB.

White Sox Spoiler In AL Central?

Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavy delivers during the first inning against the Detroit Tigers

Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavy delivers during the first inning against the Detroit Tigers

The White Sox are mathematically eliminated from this year’s postseason, but it may not stop them from playing spoiler. The Sox could be the key factor in determining the AL Central winner as they play the Tigers five more times before the season ends.

In Friday night’s game the Tigers bats struggled against recently activated starter Jake Peavy. Peavy threw seven scoreless innings, striking out eight. That game could be a taste for the White Sox future. Alex Rios scored on a Gordon Beckham home run, leading the offense, Jake Peavy had a great start, and Matt Thornton closed out the game.

Sox Lose…Guillen Blows Up Again

White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen

White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen

White Sox lose in 14 innings Thursday Night/Friday Morning to Seattle, and Ozzie Guillen blows up, again. Audio courtesy of 670 The Score In Chicago. It’s not really news if Guillen blows up, it’s just a matter of what did Ozzie say this time. Did he call out a player by name? (Jose Contreras) Any racial slurs? (Jay Mariotti) Or just a bunch of profanity mixed in with his thought? (Other 90% of the time)

This time around it was Ozzie being tired of watching bad baseball and running out of things to say. His quote, “I’m only going to say two things, I’m tired and I don’t have anything. … It was 2 1/2 hours of satisfaction and then 2 1/2 hours of horse [bleep] baseball. Go ask [the players]. I don’t have any more quotes, seriously. What the [bleep] am I going to say? They’re horse [bleep]? Yes, they are.”

White Sox Have Mini Fire Sale

white soxLate last night the White Sox reporters were told to wait in the press box after the 4-1 loss to Minnesota. The reason? White Sox GM Kenny Williams had enough with this team and tried to sell off what he could. This coming a month to the day of acquiring Jake Peavy, and a few weeks after getting Alex Rios, and paying both of them a lot of money.

Williams sent DH Jim Thome to the Dodgers and SP Jose Contreras to the Rockies, both teams in playoff races.

Zambrano the Ace

carlos_zambrano
When asked what moves I wanted the Cubs to make before the 2009 non-waiver deadline, I said I wanted to DFA all of the Chicago media (Except Bruce Miles).

I’ve commented on my blog enough about Paul Sullivan, but what he said is nowhere near as ignorant as what David Kaplan wrote about today.

“I am so sick of hearing that Carlos Zambrano is the “ace” of the Cubs staff and that he is considered one of the best starters in the baseball. That is such a pile of garbage and it is about time people start to call this guy what he really is, a fraud.”

Wow, before we all go crazy, let’s define the term “ace.”  In my eyes, the ace is the best pitcher on a certain staff.  The ace is the pitcher you want to have the ball in the toughest situations.  So, by my count, there are 30 aces in the league.  Sure, Paul Maholm isn’t an “ace” on any other team, but there are teams that have two aces, like the Phillies.

Now, let’s check Zambrano’s resume.
