The Bet: The Plot Thickens

Campell Is On His Way To A Decent Year
Coming into the season, I knew JaMarcus Russell would struggle. Even when he was drafted, I expected little out of Russell. I have outlined my thoughts about Russell in my Players At A Crossroads article about him. The Raiders, however, seemed to think Russell would be solid this season. After releasing Jeff Garcia, the Raiders had no one to play quarterback if/when Russell struggled. This, of course, is a problem the Raiders are realizing right now. Russell has been so bad this season, that he was benched for Bruce Gradkowski last week. Going forward, it looks like Russell will get another chance to shine as the Raiders starting quarterback. While the Redskins have been nearly as bad as the Raiders this season, Jason Campbell doesn’t seem to be struggling as much as you might expect. As a matter of fact, Campbell is well on his way to some career highs this season…if he can keep his job.
The Bet…Week 6

JaMarcus Russell had a better week 6, but how does the bet shape up?
Here are the updated stats through Week 6
| The Bet: JaMarcus Russell vs Jason Campbell | ||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Through Week 4 | TDs | INTs | Comp Pct | Pass Yds | Rating | |
| JaMarcus Russell | 2 | 6 | 45.6% | 830 | 51.0 | |
| Jason Campbell | 5 | 2 | 65.3% | 963 | 85.5 | |
For me, Sunday was the high point in this bet. It wasn’t that JaMarcus did anything special, it was the fact that Jason Campbell got benched for the day in Washington. With that piece of news, I thought there would be hope for #2 out in Oakland, but this is not that case, as reports are coming out this morning that Campbell will remain starting QB for Washington.
Despite Oakland upsetting Philadelphia 13-9 Sunday, very little of that win was a result of Russell. Louis Murphy threw three great blocks on one of the longest pass plays in Raider history from JaMarcus Russell to Zach Miller. Russell did ice the game with under two minutes left by completing a 12-yard pass to Gary Russell on a 3rd and 10.
Russells’ day: 17-28 for 224 yards with 2 Int, a TD and a passer rating of 68.2
NFL Notes and Trends…Week 6

Browns Kick Returner and only scoring threat Josh Cribbs
-Tom Brady threw six touchdown passes in the Patriots’ 59-0 win over the Titans, including five in the second quarter, an NFL record for one quarter. Brady also set an NFL record for the fastest five TD passes, throwing his 2nd-quarter TDs in a span of 9 minutes, 44 seconds. The previous record was 11 minutes, 13 seconds by Daryle Lamonica of the Raiders in 1969.
-Adrian Peterson rushed for 143 yards, the highest total against the Ravens in a game that Ray Lewis played in more than a decade. The last player with that high a rushing total against Lewis and the Ravens was James Allen of the Bears in 1998 (163 yards).
-The Bills defeated the Jets despite allowing 318 yards rushing. Only one other team in NFL history won a game in which its opponent gained at least that much rushing yardage: The Redskins beat the Cleveland Rams, 14-10, in a 1944 game in which the Rams rushed for 320 yards.
-Josh Cribbs tied one record and set another with a 98-yard kickoff-return touchdown against the Steelers. Cribbs became the first player in NFL history to score on a kickoff return in five straight seasons, and his total of six KOR-TD’s tied the NFL career mark that he now shares with Mel Gray, Dante Hall, Ollie Matson, Gale Sayers and Travis Williams.
-How bout this for the Bet. JaMarcus Russell’s 86-yard touchdown pass to Zach Miller was the Raiders’ longest TD pass in more than a quarter-century – since Jim Plunkett threw a 99-yarder to Cliff Branch in 1983.

I Thought Russell Would Be Bad, But Historically Inept...Yikes!
Yes, I’m aware that Monty already posted our update for this week. However, I found an article on Football Outsiders concerning JaMarcus Russell’s poor completion percentage this season that I had to link to. I do not mean to rub salt in Monty’s wounds with this. (For what it’s worth, he picked the Detroit Tigers to win the AL Central before the season and I called him an idiot. While they didn’t technically win, he would have destroyed me in a Tigers/Indians bet. Yes…I liked the Indians. I will now crawl into my baseball hole.) Anyway, click on this link and scroll to the bottom third of the page. The headline for the story is An Incomplete Failure. Seriously, Russell is only completing 39.8% of his passes. That is a staggeringly low number.
The Bet…Week 4

Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell is stopped by Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end Stylez White and safety Sabby Piscitelli.
Here is the latest update.
| The Bet: JaMarcus Russell vs Jason Campbell | ||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Through Week 4 | TDs | INTs | Comp Pct | Pass Yds | Rating | |
| JaMarcus Russell | 1 | 4 | 39.8% | 506 | 42.4 | |
| Jason Campbell | 5 | 2 | 65.3% | 963 | 85.5 | |
Well, this is getting out of hand and it is approaching a near impossibility I will win this bet, unless Jason Campbell gets benched. As a frame of reference, this past week JaMarcus Russell had his highest passer rating this season at 48.5.
The worst part of the whole situation is that the Raiders can’t even trust Russell to help them win games. Consider this: in the first quarter on Sunday these were the third down plays called by the Raiders:
- 3rd and 11: nine yard completion
- 3rd and 13: one yard rush
- 3rd and 15: eight yard completion

Campbell Can't Beat The Lions
The JaMarcus Russell/ Jason Campbell bet continues this week. While one of our horses may have started to pull away, I can’t help but notice that there is a fatal flaw to our little wager this season.
Trent Dilfer’s Best Quarterbacks In The NFL

A Former Super Bowl Winner Breaks Down The Quarterbacks
Choosing the best quarterback in the NFL is a risky proposition. If you choose Peyton Manning over Tom Brady, get ready to hear the three Super Bowl rings argument. If you choose Brady over Manning, get ready to hear some lofty statistical totals. If you don’t even consider Drew Brees, you might be in trouble. The fact is, every season there are analysts and fans that try to decide which quarterback is the best in the league. Luckily for us, ESPN’s Trent Dilfer has tiered many of the starting quarterbacks heading into the 2009 season. The article can be found here. Let’s take a look at Dilfer’s list and see how he did.
The Bet…Week 2

JaMarcus Russell is flexing while completing an impressive 35 percent of his passes
As a reminder, Chris Cwik and I have a bet regarding who will be a better QB this year, Jason Campbell or JaMarcus Russell. I proposed the bet after much Russell bashing by Cwik.
My side of the bet isn’t looking too glamorous at this point. I know only 2 games have been played, but when I see the bottom ticker showing that JaMarcus Russell is 7-24, I don’t need to look at Jason Campbell’s stats to know that I lost this week. Come on, 7-24! I don’t want to know how that ranks in recent history for lowest completion percentage with at least 20 throws, and I’m a stats guy. Not only that, but it was against the CHIEFS defense, not exactly the “Dome Patrol” from the early 90’s.

Jason Campbell Leads After Week 1
Time to lighten things up around here. Matt “Monty” Montgomery, is an unabashed lover of all things LSU. We know that, and we love him for it. As many of you may have noticed, I wrote two very similar articles about both Jason Campbell and JaMarcus Russell. While Campbell’s outlook was a bit more positive, Russell’s was not so rosy. Remember, that Russell went to the fabled Louisiana State University. Monty, obviously, took exception to the fact that I implied Russell might not be a very good NFL quarterback. Therefore…The Bet was made.
Throughout the season, we will be monitoring both Russell and Campbell in a few key statistics. Whichever quarterback outplays the other in those stats will be the winner. The loser will be buying dinner for the winner. Pictures can be taken, good times can be had. I, of course, will be taking Jason Campbell. Monty, as expected, will be taking JaMarcus Russell. The stats we will be monitoring are as follows:
- Touchdowns
- Interceptions
- Completion Percentage
- Passing Yardage
- Quarterback Rating
Let’s analyze how each of our boys did in Week 1.
Players At A Crossroads: JaMarcus Russell
Posted by Chris Cwik in Football on September 9, 2009

Russell Needs To Succeed This Season
JaMarcus Russell’s rise from fringe draft prospect to number one overall draft pick happened all within the span of a season. In 2009, he faces a similar situation. A chance to prove, once again, that he can succeed at the highest level. Russell’s NFL career has seen more lows than highs and he risks being labeled as one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history if he continues to struggle at the NFL level. With the Raiders releasing veteran Jeff Garcia, Russell will get every opportunity to show why he was the number one overall draft pick in 2007. With his NFL career possibly in the balance, can Russell perform in a crucial season?
