Bats Awaken In Philly, Yanks Take Game 3

Jayson Werth's 2 HR weren't enough for the Phillies in Game 3
After two pitching duels in New York, the first game in Philly provided plenty of fireworks. Home runs by Nick Swisher, Hideki Matsui, Alex Rodriguez (I’ll get to this one in a bit), Jayson Werth (2 times) and Carlos Ruiz gave fans more than enough reason to hang around and watch this one after a hour and 20 minute rain delay.
Game 3 was easily the most exciting game of the series, and the first time both offenses got to the opposing starter. Cole Hamels made it into the 5th inning, but gave up five runs to Yankees hitters. Hamels hasn’t gone six full innings in any of his four postseason starts. And including the regular season, he’s 1-5 with a 7.32 ERA in his last seven starts. Andy Pettitte didn’t pitch great, but did enough to earn the win, 6 innings, 4 runs allowed. Althought, Pettitte did help out his cause in the 5th by driving in Nick Swisher, the first RBI by a Yankee pitcher in a World Series game since 1964 when “Ball Four” author Jim Bouton drove in Tom Tresh.
World Series Heads To Philly Tied At 1

Utley led the Phillies to a Game 1 win.
After two games in the Bronx, what I’m most impressed with was the quality of starting pitching on both sides. All four starters, Cliff Lee, Pedro Martinez, CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett pitched into the 7th inning with success. Pedro and CC gave up solo shots, but neither allowed any significant offensive rally. A.J. pitched strong and fooled Phillies hitters while Cliff Lee pitched one of the best games in World Series history.
MLB Playoff Analysis: Philadelphia Phillies

How does Ryan Howard and the Phillies stack up in the 2009 postseason?
Season recap
For the third consecutive year, the Phillies won the NL East. They finished with a record of 93-69 and we’re never really threatened by anyone in the division.
Starters
The Phillies have one of the best starting rotations in the league. Despite underachieving this year, Cole Hamels is still the ace of this staff and has shown how good he can be in the Phillies World Series run. The acquisition of Cliff Lee from Cleveland this year could be the biggest trade of the year. Lee has been nothing short of spectacular since coming over from the Indians, but his late season struggles have been a little concerting for Phillies fans heading into the playoffs. Joe Blanton and Pedro Martinez have both resurrected their careers in Philadelphia this year and round out a very balanced Phillies Rotation.
The Heartbreaking Story Of A Fantasy Baseball Owner

Arizona Diamondbacks' closing pitcher Juan Gutierrez
This baseball season, being the arrogant prick I was, I decided to participate in seven fantasy baseball leagues thinking I could manage them all. Great joke on my part.
5 had money involved and
2 were just glorified mock drafts
Among those 5 leagues, I paid attention to each of them and each has their story this season.
I participate in a league which has a 12 players kept, minor league players, salary capped offseasons and a $250 entry fee for each team. A payout structure that pays owners per category win during the season and a playoff payout by position finished.
I have a co owner Mark, and this is our second year in the league. We took home first during the regular season and second during the playoffs last year. We made a good amount of money, so we signed up for year 2. The offseason had trades made nearly every day, salary money and draft picks being swapped so much it was hard to keep track of anything.
This season was mundane, we finished 4th, the first week of the playoffs was a breeze for us. We re-matched with the champ from last year in the semi-finals this past week. By Wednesday, our team was down 0-10-2, and not ANY category was close. Free agency was frozen and our only shortstop, Edgar Renteria was out for the season. I threw my hands up and said we were done.
I didn’t check until Saturday, when I did, I found out we had pitched 26 consecutive scoreless innings and his starters, 7 starts maximum, got rocked. Our offense batted lights out, and conversely his fell off the face of the earth. We entered Sunday down 5-6-1, with nearly every category up for grabs and we held the tiebreaker. This could have been one of the greatest comebacks fantasy baseball comebacks I have ever been a part of.
Different Starters Carrying Load For Phillies
Cliff Lee has been just outstanding since joining the Philadelphia Phillies going 4-0 with a 0.82 ERA and a 34 to 6 K/BB rate. It’s really obvious saying that Lee has been the piece needed for Philadelphia in the 2nd half. Philly was dead last in team ERA for a part of this season.
Cole Hamels has struggled with an ERA of 4.69 entering tonight. Jamie Moyer didn’t have his best stuff this year and was replaced in the rotation by Pedro Martinez, ouch! Brett Myers hasn’t pitched since May 27th and may return this season, but his positive impact is suspect. Hamels, Moyer and Myers were the three key starters that helped the Phillies win the World Series last year.
Along with Cliff Lee, Joe Blanton and J.A. Happ are carrying the starting rotation the 2nd half of this season.
-You already know about Lee.
-Blanton has not allowed more than 3 runs in a game since June 18th and
-J.A. Happ leads the team in ERA at 2.66 for his full season at the MLB-ripe age of 27.
