Kurt Warner: Hall Of Famer?

After Such A Strange Career, Does Warner Deserve To Be In The Hall?

After Such A Strange Career, Does Warner Deserve To Be In The Hall?

There’s no doubt that Kurt Warner has had one of the most unique career paths of any player in the NFL. After going un-drafted, Warner played in the Arena League and NFL Europe before finally getting his chance to succeed in the NFL. While Warner had a tremendous start to his career, he quickly crashed down to earth just a few seasons later. In 2003, Warner was benched in favor of Marc Bulger. It appeared his time as an NFL starting quarterback was over. After years of rotating between a starter and a backup, Warner finally got another chance in 2007. With Matt Leinart struggling, Warner replaced the young quarterback and looked like the Warner of old. Since 2007, Warner has thrown 77 touchdowns*. With a strong finish to his career, is Kurt Warner a Hall Of Famer?

NFL Notes And Trends Week 5

Peyton Manning passed for 309 yards and three touchdowns as the Colts improved to 5-0 with a 31-9 win.

Peyton Manning passed for 309 yards and three touchdowns as the Colts improved to 5-0 with a 31-9 win.

-Peyton Manning is the 3rd QB since 1960 to throw for 300 yards or more in his team’s first five games in a season. The other two are Kurt Warner in 2000 and Steve Young in 1998. Both Warner and Young threw for 300+yards in their first six games that season. Peyton Manning has a bye next week, but the following week is the Rams, then the 49ers. Manning could set the record.

-The Redskins are 2-3 with wins over (0-5) St. Louis and (0-5) Tampa Bay and losses to (1-4) Detroit and (1-3) Carolina and (5-0) Giants. Since the Redskins played the Giants Week 1, the Redskins opponent each week has been winless. Next week the Redskins host the (0-5) Chiefs.

-Cowboys WR Miles Austin set the Cowboys record for most receiving yards (250) in a game against KC Sunday. Who is number two on that list? Recent HOF inductee Bob Hayes.

-Falcons WR Roddy White had 210 receiving yards and 2 TD. He set the Falcons record for most receiving yards in a game. As a corollary, White and Austin become the first two receivers since Drew Hill and Stephone Page to have at least 200 receiving yards and 2 TD’s in a game. Hill and Page did that on December 22nd 1985.

-Bengals RB Cedric Benson rushed for 120 yards on 27 carries and was the first RB since Larry Johnson (2004) to rush for over 100 yards against the Ravens defense. That snaps Baltimore’s 39 game streak without a 100 yard rusher, good for 8th best since 1960. The longest streak started with 1992 Eagles who held opponents RB’s to under 100 yards for 53 straight games.  Who broke that record? A guy you may have heard of, Emmitt Smith.  Also, Emmitt Smith ran for more than 100 yards (12 times) vs. the Eagles than anyone, since 1960.

What I Learned Last Sunday

Drafting Warner Was A Good Thing, Right?

Drafting Warner Was A Good Thing, Right?

After months of waiting, the day had finally come. For me, the start of the NFL is like Christmas. Seriously, there is no difference. I, as usual, was up early and ready to enjoy the games at a local sports bar with a few friends of the site (Matt Montgomery and Kevin Tracy being two of them). After agonizing over my final fantasy roster decisions, I left and arrived at the bar. Not surprisingly, I was the first one there. Eventually, everyone got there right as the games were starting. We sat down, ordered some food and drinks, and prepared for the first slate of games. Here is was I learned Week 1.

NFL Roundup Part II

Brees Threw 6 TD vs. Lions

Brees Threw 6 TD vs. Lions

Saints Offense Doesn’t Skip A Beat

New Orleans Saints led the NFL in several offensive categories last year, including QB Drew Brees nearly breaking Dan Marino’s single season record for passing yards, and yesterday the Saints offense dropped 45 points on Detroit. Brees threw for 6 TD’s, and the offense gained over 500 yards of offense against the lowly Lions. Matthew Stafford made his debut for the Lions and struggled. He completed just above 43% of his passes, but this is part of the growing pains for starting a rookie QB. He made a couple good throws, hitting Calvin Johnson, on what Chris Cwik will argue until he’s blue in the face was touchdown but wasn’t, and Bryant Johnson on a nice out pattern. The Lions defensive woes continued, despite some turnovers, and Saints marched on to victory.

NFL Season Preview: NFC West

Can Kurt Work His Magic In 2009?

Can Kurt Work His Magic In 2009?

Don’t let a Super Bowl appearance fool you, the NFC West was a bad division last season. The best of the worst was the Arizona Cardinals. Arizona took a 9-7 record into the playoffs, got hot, and were only 35 seconds away from being the Super Bowl Champions. San Francisco experienced a mid-season resurgence after Mike Singletary took over as head coach and finished 7-9. Both the Seahawks and the Rams suffered various injuries throughout the year. Without a Quarterback, Wide Receivers, or an O-Line, Seattle finished 4-12. The lowly Rams were even worse, finishing 2-14. The Cardinals may have gone to the Super Bowl, but the Seahawks and Rams are fully recovered from their injuries. If anything, the NFC West could prove to be the most surprising division in the NFL.

From Super Bowl, to…

This year could turn out very different for Ken Whisenhunt

This Year Could Turn Out Very Different for Ken Whisenhunt

Are you ready for some football? Yes, the Hall of Fame has already been played, but football is back. While there are four games on tonight, the only one to be nationally televised is a rematch of last year’s Super Bowl. One of the biggest stories leading up to the Super Bowl was the Cardinals improbable run in the playoffs. When you consider that they lost 7 games in the regular season, went 3-7 outside of their division, and were 1-4 against playoff teams during the regular season, you start to wonderhow the heck this team caught fire. Some people even argued that the Cards were the worst team to ever make it to the Super Bowl. However, they gave the Steelers one heck of a game. If it wasn’t for a tip-toe catch by Santonio Holmes, the Cardinals fortunes would have been completely reversed. The team long seen as a joke, would have been World Champions. As we all know, that was not the case. Well, the new year is almost here for the Cardinals. Another chance to reverse their fortunes and seek out glory. However, tonight might be the only time the words “Arizona Cardinals” and “Super Bowl” are mentioned in the same sentence this season.

The Forum: Starting an NFL Franchise

10 years is a long time, Kurt Warner started his first game in 1999

10 years is a long time, Kurt Warner started his first game in 1999

Training camps have opened, roster battles have begun, and rookies are looking to make their mark. This can only mean one thing, the NFL Season is upon us. Before the season begins, we here at Foul Pole want to give you readers the best and most insightful analysis possible. We’ll start things off by exploring a timeless debate. No one will argue that Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Ed Reed are some of the top players in the game. However, all of those players are in the 30 and over club and don’t have many years left in their primes. Who is going to be the face of the NFL when that time comes? Considering that nothing lasts forever, especially in sports, here is the topic of our very first Forum: Taking age into consideration, if you could build an NFL team around one player for the next 10 years who would it be?
