Lane Kiffin to USC: Do college coaches have any integrity?

How does Lane Kiffin keep getting work?

I can’t believe I am saying this, but was Al Davis right all along? When Davis fired Kiffin after only a year and a half it just confirmed the obvious; the Oakland Raiders were still one of the worst run franchises in professional sports. Many critics felt that Davis rushed to a decision after only giving Kiffin twenty games to prove himself. Only a year and a half later, it looks as if Davis was right all along. Of course, no one in Southern California wants to hear about any of that. Honestly though, how does Lane Kiffin keep getting work?

The Bet: The Plot Thickens

Campell Is On His Way To A Decent Year

Campell Is On His Way To A Decent Year

Coming into the season, I knew JaMarcus Russell would struggle. Even when he was drafted, I expected little out of Russell. I have outlined my thoughts about Russell in my Players At A Crossroads article about him. The Raiders, however, seemed to think Russell would be solid this season. After releasing Jeff Garcia, the Raiders had no one to play quarterback if/when Russell struggled.  This, of course, is a problem the Raiders are realizing right now. Russell has been so bad this season, that he was benched for Bruce Gradkowski last week. Going forward, it looks like Russell will get another chance to shine as the Raiders starting quarterback. While the Redskins have been nearly as bad as the Raiders this season, Jason Campbell doesn’t seem to be struggling as much as you might expect. As a matter of fact, Campbell is well on his way to some career highs this season…if he can keep his job.

The Bet: Adding Fuel To The Fire

I Thought Russell Would Be Bad, But Historically Inept...Yikes!

I Thought Russell Would Be Bad, But Historically Inept...Yikes!

Yes, I’m aware that Monty already posted our update for this week. However, I found an article on Football Outsiders concerning JaMarcus Russell’s poor completion percentage this season that I had to link to. I do not mean to rub salt in Monty’s wounds with this. (For what it’s worth, he picked the Detroit Tigers to win the AL Central before the season and I called him an idiot. While they didn’t technically win, he would have destroyed me in a Tigers/Indians bet. Yes…I liked the Indians. I will now crawl into my baseball hole.) Anyway, click on this link and scroll to the bottom third of the page. The headline for the story is An Incomplete Failure. Seriously, Russell is only completing 39.8% of his passes. That is a staggeringly low number.

The Bet: Week 3

Campbell Can't Beat The Lions

Campbell Can't Beat The Lions

The JaMarcus Russell/ Jason Campbell bet continues this week. While one of our horses may have started to pull away, I can’t help but notice that there is a fatal flaw to our little wager this season.

The Bet: Week 1

Jason Campbell Leads After Week 1

Jason Campbell Leads After Week 1

Time to lighten things up around here. Matt “Monty” Montgomery, is an unabashed lover of all things LSU. We know that, and we love him for it. As many of you may have noticed, I wrote two very similar articles about both Jason Campbell and JaMarcus Russell. While Campbell’s outlook was a bit more positive, Russell’s was not so rosy. Remember, that Russell went to the fabled Louisiana State University. Monty, obviously, took exception to the fact that I implied Russell might not be a very good NFL quarterback. Therefore…The Bet was made.

Throughout the season, we will be monitoring both Russell and Campbell in a few key statistics. Whichever quarterback outplays the other in those stats will be the winner. The loser will be buying dinner for the winner. Pictures can be taken, good times can be had. I, of course, will be taking Jason Campbell. Monty, as expected, will be taking JaMarcus Russell. The stats we will be monitoring are as follows:

  • Touchdowns
  • Interceptions
  • Completion Percentage
  • Passing Yardage
  • Quarterback Rating

Let’s analyze how each of our boys did in Week 1.

Players At A Crossroads: JaMarcus Russell

Russell Needs To Succeed This Season

Russell Needs To Succeed This Season

JaMarcus Russell’s rise from fringe draft prospect to number one overall draft pick happened all within the span of a season. In 2009, he faces a similar situation. A chance to prove, once again, that he can succeed at the highest level. Russell’s NFL career has seen more lows than highs and he risks being labeled as one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history if he continues to struggle at the NFL level. With the Raiders releasing veteran Jeff Garcia, Russell will get every opportunity to show why he was the number one overall draft pick in 2007. With his NFL career possibly in the balance, can Russell perform in a crucial season?

A Former ROY Gets Another Chance

The final pre-season games are over, and it’s hard to believe that the regular season will begin in just two days. As rosters were solidified and depth charts were set, a few interesting decisions were made leading up to the start of the season. Let’s do a quick recap, shall we?

NFL Season Preview: AFC West

Are the Chargers in for a Collapse?

Are The Chargers In For A Collapse?

It should come as no surprise that the Chargers finished atop the AFC West last season. However, things did not go as planned. The Chargers had to win their last four games of the season and hope that Denver suffered an epic collapse down the stretch. Both happened, and the Chargers still only finished 8-8 in 2008. The Broncos, who had the playoffs in their sights, dropped the final three games of the season and watched the Chargers steal the division title. The Oakland Raiders continued their ineptitude with a 5 win season, and the Chiefs were even worse. The AFC West, however, had a very busy off-season. Two new quarterbacks, two new coaches, and a lot of drama filled the AFC West this off-season. Meanwhile, the Chargers got healthier all the way around. Is this San Diego’s division to lose, or will another team step up and challenge the Chargers?

Andre Smith Signs, Where is Michael Crabtree?

Andre Smith Can Buy a Lot of Donuts With That Money

Andre Smith Can Buy a Lot of Donuts With That Money

Well, it took quite some time, but Andre Smith is finally at Bengals Camp. This leaves Michael Crabtree as the only 1st round rookie that remains unsigned. Crabtree, picked 10th overall by the 49ers was supposed to have a major impact as a rookie this season. With the Pre-Season almost over, it doesn’t appear that Crabtree will be on the field any time soon. The 49ers have, supposedly, offered Crabtree a contract that is on par with what the 10th pick in the draft should make, but Crabtree is still holding out for more money. There have even been rumors that Crabtree may sit out the entire season if he and the 49ers cannot get a deal done. Meanwhile, Crabtree is losing valuable practice and conditioning hours…not to mention millions of dollars. What the hell is Crabtree thinking?

Pre-Season QB Update

Sanchez Will Have his Chance Tonight!

Sanchez Will Have his Chance Tonight

The NFL pre-season has reached the halfway point. After tonight, every team in the NFL will have played two pre-season games. Tonight’s game, however, is an important one for rookie QB Mark Sanchez. Sanchez will get his first start of the pre-season against one of the toughest defenses in the NFL. A good showing by Sanchez could mean that he’s the guy for the New York Jets this season. A poor start, and the QB competition continues. With tonight being an important night for the young signal caller, let’s take a look at some of the other QB battles in the NFL.
