Top 10 Baseball Non-Steriod Controversies Of Past Decade

The World Baseball Classic is my #1 non-steriod controversy.

The World Baseball Classic is my #1 non-steriod controversy.

Several media outlets are releasing their “Best Of’s” lists for the past year and decade. Yahoo! Sports has released a couple already, but one I wanted to comment on was their “Top 10 Baseball Non-Steroid Controversies”.

Here is my list

1. World Baseball Classic

2. Bartman

3. ASG Tie

4. Grady Leaving Pedro In

5. Umpiring Meltdowns/Instant Replay

6. Torre Leaves Yankees

7. Schilling’s Bloody Sock

8. Contraction Threats

9. Sosa Corked Bat

10. Pierzynski Reaches

Here is my reasoning…

1. WBC. This has driven owners, agents and everyone in baseball except Bud Selig nuts. The premise to make the game more “global” is a myth, and the WBC is something that Selig cites as an “accomplishment” during his time as Commissioner. The issue nearly everyone has with it is the injury risk for players that are away from their teams during spring training. MLB teams are spending more money than ever on players and the last thing they want to see is an injury or ineffectiveness from their multimillion dollar asset. Finally, the best players from each respective county haven’t played in these games, so the WBC hasn’t really proven anything, except a giant waste.

World Series Heads To Philly Tied At 1

Utley led the Phillies to a Game 1 win.

Utley led the Phillies to a Game 1 win.

After two games in the Bronx, what I’m most impressed with was the quality of starting pitching on both sides. All four starters, Cliff Lee, Pedro Martinez, CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett pitched into the 7th inning with success. Pedro and CC gave up solo shots, but neither allowed any significant offensive rally. A.J. pitched strong and fooled Phillies hitters while Cliff Lee pitched one of the best games in World Series history.

MLB Postseason Trivia For YOU!

Jimmy Rollins is piece of trivia for the amount of outs he made this year.

Jimmy Rollins is piece of trivia for the amount of outs he made this year.

Well how well do you know baseball trivia? Dan has given the blog some great nuggets and trivia regarding players in this year’s playoffs. There are 6 questions and a fact. How many correct answers can you get?

1. This year Jimmy Rollins became just the 3rd player ever to make 500 or more outs in a season 4 times. The other two are Dave Cash and Bobby Richardson. Who is the only other active player to make that many outs 3 times?

2. Only 3 Red Sox pitchers have ever qualified for the ERA title with a K/9 of 10.0 or greater. Lester’s K/9 was actually 9.96, but it rounds to 10.0. Lester is the first since Pedro Martinez in 2002 (Pedro did it 3 times) to do so.  Who is the other?

3. Jacoby Ellsbury stole 70 bases this season, setting a Red Sox franchise record. Who was the last American League player to steal 70+ bases in a season?

4. Ellsbury was the also the first player since 1986 to steal 70 or more bases while being caught 12 or fewer times. Two players did it that year. Who are they?

5. Ellsbury, despite his great speed, also managed to ground into 13 double plays this year. Since GIDP started being kept officially in 1933, who is the only player to steal 70+ bases and ground into more double plays?

6. Albert Pujols was walked 44 times intentionally this season, 5th most all-time. Barry Lamar Bonds holds the top 3 seasons in this category. Who had the season that ranks 4th all-time?

Fact:  This year’s Dodgers are the only team this decade (2000-2009) to win 95+ games without a pitcher winning at least 14 games. Chad Billingsley led the Dodgers with 12 wins this season.

MLB Playoff Analysis: Philadelphia Phillies

How does Ryan Howard and the Phillies stack up in the 2009 postseason?

How does Ryan Howard and the Phillies stack up in the 2009 postseason?

Season recap

For the third consecutive year, the Phillies won the NL East.  They finished with a record of 93-69 and we’re never really threatened by anyone in the division.

Starters

The Phillies have one of the best starting rotations in the league.   Despite underachieving this year, Cole Hamels is still the ace of this staff and has shown how good he can be in the Phillies World Series run.  The acquisition of Cliff Lee from Cleveland this year could be the biggest trade of the year.  Lee has been nothing short of spectacular since coming over from the Indians, but his late season struggles have been a little concerting for Phillies fans heading into the playoffs.  Joe Blanton and Pedro Martinez have both resurrected their careers in Philadelphia this year and round out a very balanced Phillies Rotation.

Different Starters Carrying Load For Phillies

Cliff Lee has been just outstanding since joining the Philadelphia Phillies going 4-0 with a 0.82 ERA and a 34 to 6 K/BB rate. It’s really obvious saying that Lee has been the piece needed for Philadelphia in the 2nd half. Philly was dead last in team ERA for a part of this season.

Cole Hamels has struggled with an ERA of 4.69 entering tonight. Jamie Moyer didn’t have his best stuff this year and was replaced in the rotation by Pedro Martinez, ouch! Brett Myers hasn’t pitched since May 27th and may return this season, but his positive impact is suspect. Hamels, Moyer and Myers were the three key starters that helped the Phillies win the World Series last year.

Along with Cliff Lee, Joe Blanton and J.A. Happ are carrying the starting rotation the 2nd half of this season.

-You already know about Lee.

-Blanton has not allowed more than 3 runs in a game since June 18th and

-J.A. Happ leads the team in ERA at 2.66 for his full season at the MLB-ripe age of 27.
