NFL Round Up

The MVP Thus Far

The MVP Thus Far

Week two is just about in the books, Drew Brees already has 9 touchdowns, and the Jets are the real deal. Week 2 can be a very interesting week in the NFL season. Since we, as fans, only have one game to base our perceptions on, some teams can be drastically overrated or vastly underrated. Teams that don’t look all that impressive, but win (Packers, Patriots) can show their true colors. However, teams that play well but lose in week one (Bengals, Raiders) can show that they deserve some more respect. In case you missed it, let’s recap some of the big stories from Sunday.

NFL Season Preview: NFC South

Without a healthy Delhomme, the Panthers are in serious trouble

Without a healthy Delhomme, the Panthers are in serious trouble

Carolina Panthers (11-5)

Key Additions:  Everette Brown (DE) and that’s it.

Key Departures:  D.J. Hackett (WR); Ken Lucas (CB); Jeremy Bridges (G); Geoff Hangartner (C).

The Panthers come into 2009 with one of the league’s best rushing attack.  DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart are known all around the football world and are the best 1-2 punch in football.  Williams exploded for 20 touchdowns last year, a huge breakout campaign.  Stewart is the perfect compliment with his ability to wear down opposing defenses with his bruising style.  The hope is that Jake Delhomme can lead this team to another Super Bowl run.  He’s arguably more important than either Williams or Stewart due to the lack of depth at the quarterback position.  At receiver, the Panthers lack depth, as well.  Mushin Muhammad is 36, and Steve Smith isn’t the surest thing to stay healthy at receiver.  Dwayne Jarrett has a lot of potential as the #3 receiver, but if one of those three go down, the team is in trouble.  That’s where the loss of D.J. Hackett could hurt.  The offensive line is led by former first-round pick Jordan Gross.  Jeff Otah, Ryan Kalil and Travelle Wharton are three other keys to one of the best offensive lines in the league.  It’s no wonder Williams had such a big year last year.

NFL Season Preview: NFC East

Manning Returns...And So Does His O-Line

Manning Returns...And So Does His O-Line

In 2008, the NFC East was arguably the best division in the NFL. Both the Giants and the Eagles made the playoffs, and every team finished above .500.  Although it didn’t show up in his touchdown numbers, Eli Manning had his best season and led the Giants to a 12-4 record. The Eagles had an up-and-down season, but Donovan McNabb stayed healthy and the team won 9 games. Injuries to Tony Romo and Marion Barber caused the Cowboys to drop to third in the division. Even a mid-season trade for Roy Williams would not help the Cowboys. The Redskins finished last in the division going 8-8. While the Skins looked good initially, they collapsed down the stretch. In the off-season, the Giants stood firm while the Eagles and Redskins got stronger. With the Cowboys returning to health, can anyone overtake the Giants?
