Good afternoon Gregg Easterbrook. You do not know me, and you have definitely written a numerous amount of sports articles in comparison to me, but today you wrote a piece that I had to double check if it was actually written by you. On the front page of ESPN.com, there is an article by you bashing the signing of rookie WR Michael Crabtree of the 49ers. You’re calling it a curse, “The Crabtree Curse haunts San Fran“. You point out that since the 49ers started out 3-1, they’ve since gone 0-4 and dropped to a 3-5 record after the Crabtree signing.

Listen Mr. Easterbrook, those first three wins came against the talented Cardinals, Seahawks, and Rams. Did we really think the 49ers were the real deal after beating those 3 teams? Since the Cardinals were the defending NFC champs, we gave them credit, but the other two wins aren’t credible. Even the Cardinals struggled out of the gate, and are now 5-3, with a two game lead on these 49ers, which isn’t a safe lead by any means. After week 2, SF lost Frank Gore for 3 games, in which they went 1-2. They then switched QBs at half-time against the Texans, and almost capped an impressive comeback in a 24-21 loss to a current 5-4 team, followed by an 18-14 loss to the undefeated Colts. Yes, in case you missed it, they almost beat the Colts in IND in a game where Reggie Wayne had to throw more TD passes than Peyton Manning. This week, they lost to the 1-6 Titans. The score was 34-27, so I’m assuming it was Crabtree’s fault, and not the fact that the SF defense couldn’t stop Chris Johnson, right?

In short, give the rookie a break. He got his contract, and he behaved a little childish about it, but he has put up respectable numbers on a team without a consistent QB, and he’s only played in 3 games. The 49ers are thankful that the top WR in the draft fell to them at #10, and the Raiders made the “smart” decision to take Heyward-Bey. Michael Crabtree has tremendous potential, and might even help the 49ers take down the “difficult” NFC West. He gives them another reliable target besides Frank Gore and Vernon Davis, and they’re 0-3 record since he’s been on the field is clearly not his fault. Once the 49ers begin to play the teams they beat again (SEA, ARI, and STL), they will prove to you that Michael Crabtree is not a curse, and maybe even take down the NFC West, because of the signing of Michael Crabtree.
