2 Minute Minor – Oct 8
Here’s your daily briefing on last night’s games in the NHL since there was no way any of you watched last night’s games. It’s because you were too busy scouting NBA preseason officials for the tendencies, right? (NOTE: Links take you to hockeydb.com for stats and player info.)
Phoenix 3, Pittsburgh 0 – Only four teams were in action Wednesday night. Pittsburgh must have been jealous and chose to take a night off as well. The Penguins gave up nine power play opportunities (Phoenix converted on 2 of them) and just never got into any type of rhythm. Sidney Crosby never got going either, losing 12 of 19 faceoffs and got bounced around by Ed Jovanovski multiple times. Give the Coyotes credit, through their first two game they have outscored opponents 9-3.
2 Minute Minor – Oct 7
Here’s your daily briefing on last night’s games in the NHL since there was no way any of you watched last night’s games thanks to the Minnesota Twins.

Carolina 2, Tampa Bay 1 (SO) – It was a pretty good night for goaltending in Carolina Tuesday night. Netminders Cam Ward (CAR) and Mike Smith (TAM) combined for 54 saves on 56 shots. (Both goals were on power plays.) It wasn’t until the shootout that Carolina was able to finally get the win. These two teams face off again Saturday night. I don’t know what the Vegas line will be, but take the under.
2 Minute Minor – Oct 6
Here’s your daily briefing on last night’s games in the NHL since there was no way any of you watched last night’s games.

Columbus 5, Vancouver 3 – Hello? Vancouver? The Canucks have started the new season 0-3 despite averaging about 40 shots a game. (A little accuracy would do them good.) The Blue Jackets scored three times within a 3:44 times span early in the second period to chase out Canuck netminder Roberto Luongo. Columbus (2-0) has looked great in their first two games of the season. They’ll have to keep it up if they want to complete in the tough Central division with the likes of Chicago, Detroit, Nashville, and St. Louis.
Iced Stripes – Facing Off
Note: I’ve been entrenched in the hockey refereeing ranks for the past 12 years. I won’t claim to be an expert (Or even be any good), but I think I’ve got a pretty good understanding of the sport. With the upcoming high school season, I’ll be discussing some of the finer points of the game here. If you’ve got a question or thought about hockey in general, post a comment!
Last night I learned a little tidbit, the way the NHL referees are dropping the puck for face-offs are different from previous seasons. In what may seem like an insignificant detail, it’s actually a pretty big deal.

The older style of dropping the puck.
2 Minute Minor – Oct 4
Here’s your daily briefing on last night’s games in the NHL.

Pittsburgh 4, NY Islanders 3 (SO) – In what was easily the game of the night, Sidney Crosby spoiled the debut of Islanders’ center John Tavares. Crosby and Tavares each had a goal and an assist, but Crosby ended the night on his shootout goal. The NHL’s worst team last season isn’t just concerned with season. The Islanders are struggling to find support for the “Lighthouse Project,” the plan to build a new arena. If a new one can’t be drummed up, there is a possibility the team could be sold or relocated. Just last week, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman (Booo…) came out and said that the Nassau Coliseum was the worst arena in the NHL. He’s right, it stinks. Something needs to get moving and soon.
2 Minute Minor: October 3rd
Here’s your daily briefing on last night’s games in the NHL.

Ville Koistinen (FLA)
Florida 4, Chicago 3 (SO) – The first regular-season game ever played in Finland also marked the first shootout of the new season. Chicago had the game in hand most of the tilt, but Chicago net-minder Christobal Huet allowed the tying goal to David Booth with just 2:21 remaining in regulation. The highlight went to Finnish player Ville Koistinen who scored the game winning shootout goal in front of him home Finnish crowd. Read the rest of this entry »

Here’s your daily briefing on last night’s games in the NHL.
For those of you that missed the opening night of the NHL, I feel sorry for you. It was one of the best in recent memory.

Washington 4 , Boston 1 – Nobody is surprised by the magic that Alexander Ovechkin can produce, but this beast just keeps getting better. 2 Goals and an assist.

Montreal 4, Toronto 3 (OT) - NHL! Fighting! Hurray! The game featured 3 bouts and was capped by an overtime winner by Josh Georges with :13 left before the shootout.
NHL Opening Night

Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin and Penguins Sidney Crosby
The 2009-2010 NHL season gets underway tonight with four games. Since Chris and I are rather ignorant on the subject, we have recruited some smart hockey minds to write for the blog. One of them is Dave Sim. He gives FP2FP, its first hockey article of the year. Enjoy…

October is by best month for sports fans by far. It’s the middle of the NFL season, the end of baseball, and the beginning of basketball and hockey. A sports fan’s buffet, if you will. Me, being the hockey cheerleader that I am, rank October only second to the month that involves the run for the Stanley Cup. So over the next 1230 regular season games, and the grind for the Cup, I hope to bring a little more insight and enjoyment into what I’ve always considered the toughest sport around.
With October 1st marking the opening night, I figured it’s only fair that I offer up some quick predictions along with a few other odds and ends as the season gets rolling.

Pro athletes find themselves in the far too common position of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Shootings and assault cases later we have no reason but to not trust our most trusted and revered stars. Like the boy who cried wolf it is always hard to distinguish who is in the right. However, the athletes are no longer the only ones in question when it comes to crying wolf. Most recently, Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks have been added to this list.

Big Ben
Roethlisberger’s case is interesting. Occurring in June of 2008 during a pro-am golf tournament at the Harrah’s Lake Tahoe and a claim not being filed until July 19, 2009. Andrea McNulty, the alleged victim and former employee of Harrah’s, filed a lawsuit against Roethlisberger claiming that he sexually assaulted her. Reports that were filed in the lawsuit claim that McNulty required hospitalization and treatments for depression after the assault.
Although by simple reasoning we have learned to question our favorite athletes in these situations there have been cases to prove otherwise. Most infamously and with the most notoriety, the Kobe Bryant sexual assault case from 2003. Although Bryant admitted to acting adulterously, the assault charges were soon dropped and the case was settled out of the courtroom. We learned that it is possible to trust our athletes…in some regard.
